Big Oak Family Christmas

Work is a reward and the prize is in the process. We say this often at Big Oak because in this work, perspective must lift above this realm and into the heavenly. The war is difficult but worth it, and God-breathed relationships are a necessity in maintaining a perspective focused on the generations versus only the here and now.

A global pandemic will show just how much relationship and family is vital. It will reinforce the importance of fighting through the difficult together. We weren’t made to walk through the valleys alone. Big Oak is not immune to these reminders. We welcome them because it reminds us that although this particular mission is difficult, the hurts left by circumstances beyond our control, they can be restored. Children can be made whole through the Hope of Christ and He will use families forged in the Spirit to be a light in the chaos.

As we recently interviewed a new houseparent couple, I asked them about their why…their reason for choosing this work. In explaining his why, the husband told a story of a 16-year-old boy who was one of many kids they had the honor of fostering. This young man went to apply for his first job and in completing the application he was asked to submit references who have known him for at least 10 years. As the young man thought and thought, he would consider people only to realize they hadn’t known him for near that amount of time. His case worker knew him the longest, but that only amounted to 8 years. This young man didn’t have one qualifying reference. The husband simply said, “Every kid deserves a reference. I want to be that reference in the lives of boys who need me.” Our Boys’ Ranch director and his wife recently travelled to the Gulf Coast as a former resident they raised was getting married. They had the honor of standing beside him as he made a commitment to love and cherish his wife. And, in each photo of the groom’s family, there they were as a family, united by something much deeper than blood. As tragedy struck some former residents’ families this year, they were told to call family, and there we gathered as one, in both body and spirit, bearing the burdens of one another.

Every kid deserves someone who has known them for more than 10 years.

Every kid deserves a reference, an opportunity to succeed.

Every kid deserves a photo.

Every kid deserves a shoulder to lean on.

Every kid deserves a family.

This year, with a fresh perspective, our children and Big Oak Family will find renewed appreciation for the moments of unity throughout the Christmas season. As we celebrate our Redeemer, as we decorate our homes, as we give, and receive, and prepare meals, and enjoy the beauty of the season, we will look around and notice one another. With fresh eyes, we will see this family God has woven together and celebrate what it means for each child’s future.
